Missing the Timing

How it works#

The wording of a trigger effect decides whether it can miss its timing.

An optional "When… you can" effect only triggers if its condition was the last thing that happened. If anything else happened afterwards in the same sequence, the window closes and the effect is gone.

The two classic ways to miss the timing:

• The monster was sent to the graveyard as a cost, and the activation of the card then became the last thing to happen.
• The monster was sent in the middle of a chain link's resolution, and that same chain link went on to do something else afterwards.

Worked example#

Take a monster reading "When this card is sent to the Graveyard, you can…".

Discard it as the cost of another card's activation and the effect misses the timing. The discard happened, but activating the card was the last thing to happen, not the discard.

Now give the same monster the text "If this card is sent to the Graveyard, you can…". Discard it as a cost and the effect triggers perfectly well, because "If" does not care what happened last.

Two words on the card, and the same play either works or does nothing.

Common misconceptions#

Can mandatory effects miss the timing?#

No. Only optional effects worded "When… you can" are subject to it. Mandatory triggers, whether "When…:" or "If…:", always trigger.

Does being tributed for a summon cause a miss?#

Frequently, yes. Tributing is a cost. If the monster's effect reads "When this card is sent to the Graveyard, you can", tributing it for a Tribute Summon will usually miss the timing, because the summon itself happens last.

Is this the same as an effect being negated?#

No. A negated effect was activated and then stopped. An effect that missed the timing was never activated at all. That matters for anything counting activations, and for hard once-per-turn restrictions, which are not consumed.

Does the English wording always reflect the ruling?#

For cards printed since the wording was standardised, yes — "When" versus "If" is deliberate and reliable. Some older cards were reprinted with corrected wording, so check the current text rather than an old printing.

Interactions and rulings#

• Effects that trigger on being sent to the graveyard as Link, Synchro or Fusion Material are sent during the summon, so a "When… you can" effect will typically miss.
• Xyz Material detached as a cost reaches the graveyard as a cost — the same trap applies.
• Because "If… you can" effects are immune to this, they are strictly better in decks built around discarding and material use, and that shows up in deckbuilding as a real preference between otherwise similar cards.
