The Graveyard as a Resource

In Yu-Gi-Oh! the graveyard is a public, fully accessible second hand rather than a discard pile, so sending your own cards there is often a gain rather than a loss.

How it works#

Both players can look through either graveyard at any time. Nothing in it is hidden.

More importantly, a large share of cards do their real work from there:

  • Monsters with effects that activate in the graveyard
  • Monsters that revive themselves
  • Cards that banish themselves from the graveyard as a cost for another effect
  • Payoff cards that count how many cards are in a graveyard

The consequence is that "milling" — sending cards from your deck to your graveyard — is usually setup, not damage. A deck built around the graveyard wants cards there as fast as possible.

Worked example#

A Zombie deck opens with a card that sends three monsters from the deck to the graveyard.

In most card games that is a serious cost. Here, one of those monsters revives itself, another can be banished from the graveyard to search, and a third feeds a payoff card that gains ATK for every monster in the graveyard.

Three cards "lost" produced a monster on the field, a search, and a bigger threat.

Common misconceptions#

Is milling yourself bad?#

Almost never, in a deck built for it — and dangerous in one that is not. The same effect that fuels a Zombie deck is close to a dead card in a deck whose graveyard does nothing.

The only universal risk is decking out, which almost never decides a game.

Is the graveyard private information?#

No. Either player may review either graveyard at any point during the game, and the order of cards in it is not tracked.

Does banishing a card put it in the graveyard?#

No. Banished cards are removed from play entirely, in their own zone. Banishment is the standard answer to graveyard strategies precisely because graveyard recursion cannot reach it.

Do cards sent from the deck to the graveyard trigger "sent to the graveyard" effects?#

Yes, provided the effect does not specify it must be sent from the field or hand. Read which zone the effect names — this is a common source of misplays.

Interactions and rulings#

  • Sending a card from the hand to the graveyard is not the same as discarding it. Effects that trigger on being discarded, such as Dark World monsters, do not fire when a card is "sent" from the hand.
  • Cards banished face-down cannot be looked at by either player until they return.
  • Because the graveyard is a resource, effects that banish an opponent's graveyard are removal, not a minor inconvenience.
