Zones & Board

Extra Monster Zone

The shared zone between the two players’ fields. Link Summons and Pendulum Summons from the Extra Deck require it; since April 2020, Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Summons do not.

Current under Master Rule (April 2020 revision)

How it works#

There are two Extra Monster Zones, sitting between the two players' fields and shared by both. Each player may occupy one at a time.

Under the current rules:

  • Link Monsters must be summoned to an Extra Monster Zone, or to a Main Monster Zone that another Link Monster's arrow points at.
  • Pendulum Monsters Special Summoned from the face-up Extra Deck via a Pendulum Summon carry the same restriction as Link Monsters — an Extra Monster Zone, or a Main Monster Zone a Link Monster's arrow points at.
  • Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Monsters from the Extra Deck may be summoned to any free Main Monster Zone. They do not need an Extra Monster Zone, and they do not need a Link arrow.

Once a Link Monster is in an Extra Monster Zone, the Main Monster Zones its arrows point at are unlocked for further Link Summons or Pendulum Summons targeting those zones.

Worked example#

Your board is empty and you want a Synchro Monster and a Link Monster.

Synchro Summon first — straight into a Main Monster Zone, no setup required. Then Link Summon into your Extra Monster Zone.

Under the pre-2020 rules this sequence was impossible: the Synchro would have needed the Extra Monster Zone itself, and you could not have had both without a Link arrow pointing somewhere useful.

Common misconceptions#

No. Not since April 2020.

Between 2017 and 2020, Master Rule 4 required every Extra Deck monster to occupy an Extra Monster Zone or a Link-pointed zone. That rule was revised for Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Monsters. Today only Link Monsters and Pendulum Monsters summoned from the Extra Deck carry the restriction.

Any guide, video or forum post describing the old behaviour predates April 2020, however confidently it is written.

Does the April 2020 revision apply to Pendulum Monsters too?#

No. This is a frequent point of confusion because Fusion, Synchro and Xyz all lost the restriction in the same revision, and Pendulum sits in the Extra Deck alongside them. Pendulum Monsters Special Summoned from the face-up Extra Deck still need an Extra Monster Zone or a Link-pointed Main Monster Zone, exactly like a Link Monster. A Pendulum Monster summoned from the hand during the same Pendulum Summon has no such restriction — the zone rule only bites for the Extra Deck half of the summon.

Can both players use the same Extra Monster Zone?#

No. The two zones are shared, but a zone occupied by one player is unavailable to the other, and each player may only ever occupy one.

Nothing. They stay exactly where they are. The arrow was only needed at the moment of summoning; it is not an ongoing requirement.

Does a monster moved to the Extra Monster Zone by an effect count as being summoned there?#

Only if the effect summons it there. Effects that move an existing monster between zones do not re-summon it, and do not trigger summon-response cards.

Interactions and rulings#

  • If both Extra Monster Zones are occupied by your opponent — which cannot happen under normal rules, as each player may use only one — you would be unable to Link Summon or Extra-Deck Pendulum Summon without an existing Link arrow.
  • A Link Monster in a Main Monster Zone still requires another Link Monster pointing at that zone. The same is true for a Pendulum Monster coming from the Extra Deck. Only the Extra Monster Zone is unconditionally available.
  • Column-based effects treat the Extra Monster Zone as part of a column, which matters for the small set of cards that care about columns.
