How it works#
- Activate a card or effect that performs a Fusion Summon — Polymerization, Super Polymerization, or an archetype-specific fusion spell.
- The Fusion Monster lists its materials. You must have monsters matching every listed material, in whichever zones the fusion card allows — normally hand and field.
- The materials are sent to the graveyard as part of the Fusion Summon.
- The Fusion Monster is summoned from the Extra Deck.
Some Fusion Monsters perform a contact fusion: they carry their own summoning procedure and need no fusion spell at all. Elemental HERO Neos and the Gladiator Beast fusions work this way, shuffling or returning their materials rather than sending them to the graveyard.
Worked example#
You control Elemental HERO Sparkman and hold Elemental HERO Clayman and Polymerization.
Activate Polymerization. It sends Sparkman from the field and Clayman from your hand to the graveyard, and you Fusion Summon Elemental HERO Thunder Giant from the Extra Deck.
With Miracle Fusion instead, the materials come from your graveyard and are banished rather than sent. That matters, because banished materials are out of reach of graveyard revival.
Common misconceptions#
Can Ash Blossom stop a Fusion Summon?#
Not the summon itself, but often the card performing it. Ash Blossom negates effects that Special Summon from the Deck — most fusion spells summon from the Extra Deck, which Ash does not cover.
Ash Blossom does hit fusion cards that search or send from the Deck as part of their effect, such as Fusion Deployment.
Does Polymerization target its materials?#
No. Polymerization does not target. Monsters that "cannot be targeted by card effects" can still be used as its material, and Super Polymerization can take your opponent's untargetable monsters on the same principle.
Are fusion materials "tributed"?#
No. They are sent to the graveyard as a Fusion Summon cost. Effects that trigger on being tributed do not fire, but effects that trigger on being sent to the graveyard do.
Interactions and rulings#
- Super Polymerization cannot be responded to at all — its cost includes discarding a card and its text states the activation cannot be responded to. This is a property of that card, not of Fusion Summoning.
- A Fusion Monster that was properly Fusion Summoned may later be revived from the graveyard by Monster Reborn, unless its text says it cannot be Special Summoned by other ways.
- Fusion Monsters may be summoned to any free Main Monster Zone under the current rules. The Extra Monster Zone is not required.
