How it works#
- Control two or more face-up monsters of the same Level — the exact count is stated on the Xyz Monster.
- Overlay them. They are not sent anywhere; they become Xyz Materials attached beneath the Xyz Monster.
- Summon the Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck. Its Rank equals the Level of the materials used.
- Most Xyz effects cost a detach: you move one material to the graveyard to pay.
Rank is not Level. Xyz Monsters have no Level at all, which quietly excludes them from a large body of Level-based support and disruption.
Worked example#
You control two Level 4 monsters. Overlay both to Xyz Summon a Rank 4 monster such as Number 41: Bagooska.
Bagooska then detaches one material during each of your Standby Phases, and destroys itself when it cannot. Two materials therefore buy it two of your turns on the field — the materials are a clock, not a pool of activations.
Common misconceptions#
Are Xyz Materials in the graveyard?#
No, and this is the mechanic's defining quirk. They sit attached to the Xyz Monster, in no zone at all. Graveyard effects cannot reach them, and monsters attached as material do not trigger graveyard effects until they are detached.
Does an Xyz Monster have a Level equal to its Rank?#
No. It has no Level. Effects that target "a Level 4 or lower monster" cannot touch a Rank 4 Xyz, and it cannot be used for a Synchro Summon, which needs Levels.
If the Xyz Monster leaves the field, what happens to its materials?#
They go to the graveyard. They were never on the field, so effects that trigger on leaving the field do not fire for them.
Can you use monsters of different Levels?#
Only if the Xyz Monster says so. The material line on the card is the requirement, and most name a single Level. A few Xyz Monsters accept mixed Levels explicitly, and Level-changing effects can bring a monster into line before you overlay — but nothing bends the printed requirement on its own.
Interactions and rulings#
- Detaching a material is usually a cost, paid on activation. It happens even if the effect is later negated.
- A card that has been attached as Xyz Material and then detached goes to the graveyard, and effects triggering on reaching the graveyard fire at that point.
- Rank-Up-Magic spells overlay an existing Xyz Monster into a higher-Rank one, carrying the original along as material.
