How it works#
- Once per turn, during either Main Phase, you may Normal Summon or Set one monster from your hand. The two share a single allowance — doing either uses it up.
- Level 4 and below need no tribute.
- Level 5 and 6 require you to tribute one monster you control.
- Level 7 and above require two tributes. This is called a Tribute Summon, and it is still a Normal Summon.
- A Normal Summon puts the monster face-up in attack position. A Set puts it face-down in defence position.
Cards such as Double Summon grant an additional Normal Summon for the turn. These stack: each one raises your allowance by one.
Worked example#
You control nothing and hold Sangan and Jinzo.
Sangan is Level 3, so you Normal Summon it with no tribute. That is your Normal Summon for the turn. Jinzo, at Level 6, would have needed a tribute and a second allowance you no longer have.
Had you drawn Double Summon, you could Normal Summon Sangan, activate Double Summon, then tribute Sangan to Tribute Summon Jinzo.
Common misconceptions#
Can you respond to a Normal Summon with Ash Blossom?#
No. A Normal Summon is an inherent summon — part of the rules, not an activated effect. There is no activation to respond to, so hand traps that negate effects have nothing to catch.
What you can respond to is the summon happening: Torrential Tribute, Solemn Judgment and Infinite Impermanence all specify "when a monster is Normal Summoned" or target a face-up monster, and they work fine.
Does Setting a monster use your Normal Summon?#
Yes. Normal Summoning and Setting draw on the same once-per-turn allowance. Setting a monster face-down means you cannot also Normal Summon one that turn.
Is a Tribute Summon a different kind of summon?#
No. A Tribute Summon is a Normal Summon that happens to cost tributes. Any card that says "when a monster is Normal Summoned" sees it, and any card that stops Normal Summons stops it.
Do the monsters you tribute count as being sent to the graveyard by an effect?#
No. Tributing is a cost paid by the rules, not an effect sending cards to the graveyard. Effects that trigger "if this card is sent to the GY by a card effect" do not trigger from being tributed for a summon.
Interactions and rulings#
- Monsters that "cannot be Normal Summoned/Set" must reach the field by their own listed method. Generic revival is usually still legal for them once they have been properly summoned at least once.
- If your Normal Summon is negated by Solemn Judgment, the allowance is still spent — you do not get it back.
- Tributes are paid as part of the summon itself, not as a separate activation, so effects that would replace or protect the tributed monster get no window to respond first.
