Trickstar

Trickstar is a burn archetype, but where most burn strategies rely on dedicated damage spells, this one converts routine game actions — the opponent activating Spell and Trap cards, summoning monsters, adding cards to hand, or banishing cards from their GY — directly into chip damage. Nearly every monster in the archetype carries a passive that triggers for 200 damage when the opponent performs one of these common actions, meaning the drain begins the moment play starts and compounds across a full game without the Trickstar player needing to dedicate card slots to dedicated burn cards. The goal is to reduce the opponent to zero through accumulated drains rather than through combat, though Trickstar Holly Angel and Trickstar Black Catbat create a resilient board that supports both.

The engine opens with Trickstar Candina, whose Normal Summon searches any Trickstar card, typically finding Trickstar Light Stage or Trickstar Lycoris. Light Stage adds a second monster from the Deck on activation and simultaneously locks down an opponent's Set card, forcing it to activate during the End Phase or be sent to the GY — a trap that pairs cleanly with the 200-damage triggers on Lycoris and Trickstar Narkissus. Trickstar Reincarnation adds the archetype's most punishing moment: banishing the opponent's entire hand and having them redraw, which triggers Lycoris for 200 damage per card drawn and can end a duel outright if the opponent's LP are already low.

Later support expanded the archetype toward Fusion monsters. Trickstar Noble Angel searches Blue Tears cards on Link Summon and can destroy face-up cards whenever effect damage is dealt, letting damage triggers double as spot removal. Trickstar Band Sweet Guitar doubles effect damage dealt by a linked Trickstar Link Monster and grows in ATK each time the opponent takes Trickstar damage, giving the deck a genuine threat in the battle phase that snowballs alongside its burn.
