Playing Style

The Spider archetype distinguishes itself from other Insect strategies by pairing a Level-manipulation engine with Xyz Summoning rather than the swarm-and-beatdown approach typical of the type. Mother Spider Splitter can Special Summon itself from the hand when you control no monsters, then Tribute itself to flood the field with up to three Baby Spiders directly from the Deck, each immediately set to Level 5. That cluster of Level 5 Insects then points toward a DARK Xyz Summon, since the Baby Spiders produced this way are restricted to that category of Extra Deck play.

Baby Spider adds a second layer to the engine by allowing you to Tribute a DARK monster to raise the Levels of every Baby Spider you control simultaneously, giving the deck flexibility in hitting Xyz Ranks beyond 5 when the situation calls for it. Once an Xyz Monster has been established, Baby Spider can reach back from the Graveyard — at the cost of half your Life Points and an Xyz material — to revive a DARK monster, keeping the board stocked or recovering a key piece that was used earlier in the turn.

The overall shape of the deck favours going first, since Mother Spider Splitter's self-Special Summon requires an empty monster zone and the combo flows most cleanly from a cold board. The heavy dependence on DARK Xyz Monsters means the archetype benefits considerably from whichever Rank 5 and adjacent DARK options the Extra Deck can provide.
